Analysis Of Metal Stamping Dies in China

Based on these predictions, is it reasonable to assume that the importance of metal stamping is rising? This article answers this question.

We will start with the definition of metal stamping. From my point of view, it includes two basic cold forming methods - progressive die stamping and deep drawing stamping. Basically, progressive die stamping uses flat metal, which is located above the die and then forced into the die under extreme pressure. This gives the metal the shape of a mold. When further forming is required, this process becomes "progressive" stamping. In progressive stamping, parts are transferred to another die or a series of dies to further change their shape.

The second cold forming method used in the metal stamping industry is deep drawing, which uses hollow metal tubes instead of flat metal plates. These tubes are forced into the mold using repeated compression shocks. The resulting part is hollow with a depth greater than its diameter.

Due to the force used to form it into the final shape, both methods can produce stronger parts than the original metal.

Metal stamping supports several key industries

The versatility, accuracy, cost-effectiveness and durability of parts produced by metal stamping are the main reasons why it is crucial to various manufacturing industries. Examples include:

Medical devices and equipment

Doctors rely on sophisticated medical devices to help them save lives. The precision of metal stamping makes it the preferred manufacturer of medical devices and equipment. Metal stamping enables manufacturers to fully control the manufacturing process, from design to production, and then to produce products that meet the strict requirements of the medical industry.

Electrical appliances (commercial; and residential)

Electrical appliances are made of flat metal blanks, and it is best to form them through metal stamping process, which is why metal stamping has become the main solution for electrical appliance manufacturers. From refrigerators to freezers, to ovens and stoves, metal stamping provides the industry with cost-effective, reliable and high-quality results.

space flight

As with medical devices, the quality of components used in the aerospace industry can mean the survival of end users. In this highly regulated industry, meeting high standards and strict safety regulations is the perfect choice for metal stamping. Hardware stamping companies cooperating with aerospace companies are very familiar with DOD, FAA and NASA regulations, and comply with AS9100 standards.

Original equipment manufacturing (OEM)

OEMs rely on precision metal stamped parts for high strength, durability and long service life. Metal stamping is also cost-effective and easy to automate, making it an ideal choice for OEM manufacturers seeking to produce high-precision parts quickly and cheaply.

Construction equipment and hardware

Construction equipment and hardware often face harsh outdoor conditions, heavy loads, extreme wear, and sometimes corrosive environments. These are the main reasons why manufacturers turn to stamped metal, because its high strength and wear resistance are unparalleled in architectural applications.

Electrical components

Clips, connectors, housings, fasteners and a large number of other electrical components are produced by metal stamping, because they are durable, may be very complex, and their forming accuracy is very high, which makes them suitable for a large number of electronic products and power applications that need reliable and long-term operation.

Automobile and truck manufacturing

For decades, the automotive industry has been the main user of metal stamping technology. Metal stamping is used to form various internal and external components, such as body panels and internal components. The increasing investment of automobile manufacturers in production facilities in China, India and Japan indicates the continuous growth of demand.

Although this undoubtedly proves the importance of metal stamping in several key industries, we have not proved that the importance of metal stamping is rising. So let's look at the benefits associated with metal stamping.

So far, we have learned that metal stamping is very suitable for rapid production of simple and complex parts in various industries.

So what are the benefits of all stamping components?

High accuracy

Hardware stamping has few competitors in the accuracy and strict tolerance of parts production.

Repeatable mass production run

Once the mold is made, metal stamping is unparalleled in the speed and efficiency of mass production.

flexibility

The various shapes and forms that can be made in the process of metal stamping are only limited by the imagination of the designer.

Strict process control

From design to production, metal stamping has strict control to ensure that your parts are ready for assembly after completion.

All the facts listed above show the bright future of the metal stamping industry. Although I think I am a person with half a glass of water, the practical aspect of my nature forces me to carefully examine the facts.

First of all, I believe that the hardware stamping industry is crucial to the success of many key industries. However, I am concerned that the near future of many of these key industries is being impacted by the forces of inflation and post pandemic malaise. In short, the future may not be as beautiful as many people have us believe.

This is critical, because the future of these key industries is also closely related to our future.

The growth rate of the metal stamping industry quoted in the first paragraph is estimated to be 4.75%. A promising statistic, but it is not so optimistic when considering the impact of inflation. As we all know, the inflation rate in the United States reached 7.87% in February, much higher than the 7.48% in January, which is astonishing compared with the 1.68% in February 2021. This inflationary trend is not limited to the United States. This is a global phenomenon.

My view is that the 4.75% growth rate of the metal stamping industry is offset by the spiraling inflation rate. Using the figure of 7.87% in February, we can see that the hardware stamping industry has actually contracted by more than 3% (4.75%-7.87% = negative 3.12%). In addition, the destruction caused by covid-19 pandemic of covid-19 epidemic and my optimism about the real organic growth of metal stamping industry are also weakening.

in summary

There is no doubt that the hardware stamping industry has won the reputation and occupies a crucial position in many key industries. Compared with many other molding options, metal stamping has obvious advantages. In this sense, its future is safe and its continuous growth is guaranteed.

However, we find ourselves in an unusual period. The upheaval caused by the pandemic and rampant global inflation trend will have a negative impact on the real organic growth of our industry and other industries. Moreover, we have not considered the consequences of the phenomenon of backflow, which has been on the rise since the shortage and supply chain disruption after the pandemic.

Yes, we have reason to be cautious and optimistic, but in this uncertain environment, we must act with extreme caution.
